From #TEDGlobal2017 in Arusha: Designing (and Supporting) Medical Innovations in Malawi

he world of medical innovation is saturated with examples of high-tech gadgets and software that make healthcare easier, cheaper, faster, better, more personal. But the calculus is different when you’re designing technology solutions without the traditional infrastructure on which they thrive, like reliable power and speedy internet connections.

For Soyapi Mumba and his engineering colleagues at Baobab Health Trust in Malawi, this reality meant they had to get creative:

“It is inspiring and fun to follow technology trends across the globe, but to make them workin low-resourced environments like public hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa, we have had to become jacks-of-all-trades and build whole systems, including the infrastructure, from the ground up.”
